5-Year Plan for Omgoi Project
April 2001 to April 2006

  • Main Purpose of the Omgoi Project

The main purpose of the Omgoi Project is to develop all aspects of the individual lives and community life of the tribal people in Omgoi in accordance with the principles, values, and Teachings of Baha'u'llah. Because of the vital role education plays in the social and economic development process, the Project places special emphasis on improving the education of women, youth, and children, and aims to become a major regional training center for them.

  • The Focus of the Development - Capacity Building

In line with the goals of the Baha'i Foundation of Thailand, the Project aims to develop the tribal communities by focusing on building the capacity of the tribal people and their institutions to apply the principles, concepts and Teachings of the Revelation of Baha'u'llah to the various aspects of daily life, so that through consultation, they can make profound decisions about their spiritual and material progress, and then implement these decisions. In this way, the Project will enable the tribal communities to uplift themselves, become self-sufficient and self-reliant, and also establish consistent patterns of positive change, both in the spiritual and material condition of their individual lives and their communities.

  • The Development of Human Resources

Developing human resources is a vital part of the Project's activities because this is essential to effective social progress. Training programs are held to build the capacity of the tribal people, communities, and institutions by developing necessary practical skills, knowledge, attitudes, capabilities, as well as empowering behaviours and leadership skills. As part of this capacity building, the Project aims to develop the capacity of the people to become literacy and children's class teachers, administrators, health trainers, and effective in other public service professions.

The Project considers it important to develop the attitudes of the tribal people because attitudes stem from the guiding values and principles that direct an individual's behaviour and decisions. Capabilities are also developed because they result from the mastery of principles and concepts that enable an individual to apply his talents to develop his community.

The Project strives to develop people's capabilities, attitudes, skills, and knowledge by means of a systematic training program with a clearly defined curriculum that can build capacity effectively, skilled trainers, and a wide variety of learning experiences both in and outside Omgoi. At the same time, the Project enables individuals to participate in creating and implementing projects that will lead to the continuous development of their community's social and economic well-being.

  • The Living and Learning Environment

An essential means to achieving the goals of the Project is to create a positive, loving and caring living and learning environment, infused with the principles, values, and Teachings of Baha'u'llah

  • Guiding Principles

To ensure that the Omgoi tribal communities will become the spearhead of spiritual, social and economic transformation in their geographical area, the Project adheres strictly to the principles and Teachings of the Baha'i Faith, and helps to promote the operating principle and ultimate goal of Baha'u'llah's Revelation, which is the oneness of mankind and the creation of a new world civilization. Guided by the following principles, the Project :

    • receives its driving force from natural stirrings at the grass roots level of the Omgoi tribal communities, .
    • helps the participating communities and institutions to increase their capabilities.
    • liberates the human potential of the participating communities through educational processes.
    • encourages greater self-reliance and interdependency amongst the participating communities.
    • focuses not only on the material aspects of life, but also on the social and spiritual components.
    • recognizes the interrelation of social structures and the individual, and will contribute to develop both the individual and the social environment.
    • makes use of the fruits of science and technology, and operates in accordance with the highest standards of human and cultural values and wisdom.
    • is conducive to the best interests of society, and not to the vested interests of a few individuals or groups.
    • contributes to the strengthening of unity and harmony, and avoids any relationship with divisive forces or movements.
    • promotes cooperation and mutual assistance, and does not engender a competitive spirit.

  • Benefits for the Project's Participants

The project administrators and teachers exemplify the principles, values and Teachings of Baha'u'llah, and encourage the tribal communities to incorporate these Teachings in their daily lives; not only so that they can continuously increase their moral stature and the quality of their lives, but also so that they can contribute in truly significant and as yet unimaginably great ways to the development of Thai society and mankind.

At present as well as in this 5-year plan, there are 4 main areas of service, as follows:

    1. Dormitory Project :
      • This project will help the poor tribal students to continue their high school education while simultaneously acquiring moral education and some skills that they could use to help themselves and their community.

    2. Non-Resident Children and Youth Class Project :
      • This project serves the children and youth in Omgoi town and villages nearby.
      • It will also evolve, God willing, into a center for learning and developing human resources.

    3. Community Development Project :
      • This project will be our pilot project to extend the work of SED to village level by means of utilizing the students, who have graduated from high school as tutorial teachers, while staying in the dormitory.

    4. Collaboration With Various Government Agencies :
      • To develop a close and in some cases a closer working relationship with government agencies, and to be up to date with the current developments in the same field of service.
